It Once Was is an accumulated database derived from extensive archival research, study of historical maps and photographs, and archaeological digs, to uncover the truths of past erased. These buildings and structures have been reduced to ruins and rubble, or traces and marks on the ground. They were evidence for an existence, and bore witness to history, both mundane and significant.
The database serves as a resource for future studies on these places, which have yet to be included in mainstream history and records.
Keywords: forgotten, history, in situ, memory, places, ruins.
